CHURCH HILL - The Volunteer Lady Falcons remained undefeated Tuesday with a 13-3 romp over Tennessee High.
Volunteer is sitting atop the Big Nine Conference at 5-0. The Lady Falcons are 6-0 overall.
"We played well. We put the ball in play again. We hit the ball hard," said Volunteer Softball Coach Jackie Strickler.
The Lady Falcons collected 16 hits, led by Mackenzie Draine, who was 4-for-4 with a double and triple, and April Byington, who had two hits, one a three-run homer.
Caitlin Smith added two hits, while Bridget Benton reached base five times on two hits and three walks. Tasha Dean had two hits, as well.
"We're swinging the bats well. We've just got to keep it up," Strickler said.
The Lady Falcons scored once in the first, then five more times in both the second and third innings, to take an 11-1 lead through three innings.
Tennessee High added another two runs in the fourth to trim Volunteer's lead to 11-3.
However, the Lady Falcons responded, matching those two runs the next two innings.
Taylor Williams (4-0) started and made adjustments to win the game.
"Taylor didn't throw the best game she has thrown, but she kept working back at it. She was able to change her strike zone," Strickler said. "She did a good job of throwing what the umpire was calling. That's what I tell my pitchers: don't blame the umpire for not throwing strikes; you adjust to his strike zone, and she did. I was glad to see that.
"Taylor has really stepped up for us this year with four wins," Strickler said.
Thursday's game at Dobyns-Bennett was postponed due to rain. The Lady Falcons are slated to play in this weekend's Lady Blue Devil Tournament at Unicoi, weather permitting.
