CHURCH HILL — Volunteer’s volleyball team split its first two matches of the season this week.
On Monday evening in Church Hill the Lady Falcons hosted fellow Big Nine Conference member David Crockett and blanked the Lady Pioneers by a score of 25-20, 25-16, 25-19.
On Tuesday night Volunteer was on the receiving end of a three-games to none shut-out, falling 25-16, 25-11, 25-18.
Mackenzie Draine was among Volunteer’s leaders in Monday evening’s win, putting up 10 assists and four kills.
Senior Tasha Dean was a focal point of the first match, helping Volunteer break open a close game with her serve. Dean finished the night with eight service points, leading Volunteer in that category. She also had seven digs and a couple of blocks.
Jodi Shipley totaled six kills, five points and eight assists for Volunteer.
Haley Kimmel had a half dozen kills and a couple of blocks.
Brooke Fletcher served up six points also.
David Crockett led briefly in the third set before the home-standing Lady Falcons rallied mid-way through en route to the Big Nine victory.
On the second night of the season Volunteer was able to hang with Sullivan East in Bluff City through part of the first set, but fell by nine points.
The second set was not very competitive and the Lady Patriots coasted to a 14-point win. Volunteer played its best volleyball of the night in the third set once its back was up against the wall, but the home team was simply too much for the Lady Falcons to overcome and they fell by seven points.
The Volunteer volleyball team will spend all of next week on the road. After the holiday on Monday the Lady Falcons visit Daniel Boone in Gray on Tuesday.
Thursday brings a trip to Kingsport to face Dobyns-Bennett.
On Saturday, September 6, the Lady Falcons will play their first non-conference matches of the season when they travel to Elizabethton to play in the Lady Cyclones’ annual volleyball tournament.
