CHURCH HILL — Volunteer hosted the Big Nine Conference golf tournament at Silver Lake Golf Course Monday afternoon, but playing on familiar terrain didn’t help the Falcons to a conference championship.
Volunteer’s top performer was junior Lucas Armstrong, who carded a 74, five strokes off the winning pace and only good enough for fourth overall in the individual standings.
Top honors went to Dobyns-Bennett’s Alex Ratliff, who shot a three-under round of 69, edging out Science Hill’s Michael Hembree by one shot.
Hembree’s fellow Hilltopper Matt Love was one stroke over par for third place, helping Science Hill to the overall team title.
As a squad the Hilltoppers shot a 298, placing a third golfer, Zach Botts with a 77, in the top 10.
Second place Dobyns-Bennett, with a 301, only had two golfers break into the top 10, Ratliff and fifth place finisher Ross Ramsdale.
The Falcons, still, had a solid day. As a team Volunteer finished third with a 312, three strokes better than fourth place Sullivan South’s 315.
Additionally, two other Falcons cracked what proved to be a top 11 as Justin Wright and Tyler Armstrong, along with Botts and Sullivan East’s Kyle Warden all carded 77s, tying for eighth place. Aside from Science Hill, Volunteer was the only school to place three golfers in the top 10.
Tennessee High’s Jace Devault rounded out the top 10, tying Ramsdale for fifth with a 75. His Viking teammates combined with him to shoot a 321, taking fifth place in the team competition. East was six with a 323, then came Central (329), Daniel Boone (335) and David Crockett (348).
