CHURCH HILL -As you stand in the front yard of the New Canton Plantation in Church Hill, you can almost feel the history that surrounds the land. From the beautiful historic home, to the mill that is still on the land and natural beauty of the rolling hills, it is hard to not want to imagine the scene of the land when it was a self-sufficient farm dating back to 1840.

Now, the current owners, Bill and Angela Birdsong, open their private residence to allow others to celebrate weddings, corporate gatherings and parties, in complete antebellem southern style. The venue, which first opened to the public in 2009, held two events in 2009, and 12 events in 2010. The New Canton Plantation is unique in the fact that the price to reserve the venue includes many extra details needed to put on an event.

"We provide an 'event-ready venue'," Bill Birdsong said. "What that means is you bring the food, photographer and flowers and we'll provide everything else for the event."

Pricing for weddings at the plantation begins at $3,500, and small corporate events and parties on weekdays and off-season weekends start around $550, and packages typically include a large reception tent, tables, chairs, linens, set up of event, parking attendants and staff to work the event. Also included in the pricing is the assistance of Angela in coordinating any event and any vendors that come to the site.

"Angela works closely with brides for vendors," Bill said. "It makes planning the wedding easier because she can funnel couples to the vendors that suit their needs."

The plantation offers several options for ceremony sites around the property, as well as a 40-foot by 65-foot veranda for the reception area. The Birdsongs also provide a spacious bridal suite and groom's quarters within the home for the wedding party to prepare prior to the ceremony.

So far the Birdsongs have hosted weddings with attendees from as far away as Los Angeles and even South Africa, but many local couples from surrounding communities chose the locale for their wedding day as well.

"It's an exciting business and we enjoy all the wonderful people we've met so far," Angela said.

Above all, the Birdsongs want any group or family that chooses New Canton Plantation for an event to feel like they are a part of the family with true, southern hospitality.

"We love being gracious hosts," Bill said. "The plantation is a great place for families and friends to gather because it is a home. When people come here for an event, we want them to take step back in time, but with all the modern amenities to make their event a success."
