Edith Davis Phillips, age 89 of Front Royal, Virginia formerly of Rogersville, passed away Friday, August 8, 2008 at her son’s home after an extended period of declining health.
She was born January 14, 1919 near Pressmen’s Home. Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Hickory Cove Baptist Church. She worked for The International Printing Pressmen's and Assistants Union, Pressmen's Home, Tennessee, and the Graphics and Communications Union, Washington, D. C., retiring after 41 years service in the printing union. She held numerous offices in the local office workers union. She worked for Raleigh's Clothing Store, Landover, Maryland. She was a fifty year member and past Worthy Matron of Hasson Chapter No. 179 Order of the Eastern Star, Rogersville, Tennessee. Mrs. Phillips was the youngest child of the late George Harvey and Belle Birdie Manis Davis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John J. Phillips, Jr. (Jack); two sisters, Laura Bobbie Canipe (Charley) and Hazel Alvis (Ed) and a brother, Luther Davis. Survivors include her son, John J. Phillips, III (Joey) and fiancée, Helen Heater of Front Royal, VA; nieces, Bennie Smith and husband, Ballard and Linda Collier; nephews, Wayne Davis and wife, Joyce and Charles Luther (Gus) Canipe; dear friend who was like a sister, Ruby Feathers Osborne; caregivers, Helen Heater, Vicki Mahoney, Barbara Childress; special companion and friend Ann Hammons who always brought a smile and a song to her lips. Calling hours were 5 to 7p.m., Tuesday, August 12, 2008 with Order of Eastern Star Services provided by Hasson Chapter No. 179 prior to the funeral service at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville. Funeral service was conducted at 7 p.m., Tuesday, August 12, 2008 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. John North officiating. Graveside service was 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at McKinney Cemetery, Rogersville.
