James Edward Pratt (Pappy), was born on December 1, 1932 in a small house in Carters Valley. He lived his allotted time on earth very well, surrounded by those he loved most, and died peacefully at home on May 26, 2012, less than a mile from where he was born.
He attended Valley View, a one room school, in his early years. He then attended and graduated from Lynn View High School where he met his wife, Areatha.
He entered the Air Force in 1952 and attained the rank of Sergeant after Honorable Discharge from military service. He attended ETSU and received a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He taught school at Ft. Robinson Elementary, Orebank Elementary, and then Rye Cove High School, Virginia where he also coached athletics and received many honors for his coaching accomplishments. He returned to ETSU later in life to receive his Master's degree in Environmental Science and worked as Supervisor in the Sarasota County Health Department in Venice Florida.
He returned to his beloved home after 1975 and began teaching and coaching athletics again at Church Hill Middle School, again receiving many coaching awards to the recognition.
Throughout his adult life he also worked as an accomplished Stone Mason. He was very active in the community playing with the "Church Hill Jammers", a band that gathered at the Church Hill Senior Center and with the band "The Senior Moments" at the Mt. Carmel Senior Center.
Nothing in life was more precious to him than his family. He lived his life giving to and providing for others and will always be remembered for his generosity and compassion.
